Schools across Yorkshire and the Humber are getting into the World Cup spirit as part of an enterprise initiative looking to find tomorrow’s business leaders – young people are being asked to design a football-themed sports drink.

Businesses from across Yorkshire and Humber joined secondary heads and college principals at a conference in Leeds last week which addressed how an impending law change will significantly impact young people in education, apprenticeships, young workers as well as employment opportunities.

The Annual Real Business Challenge reached its finale on Friday 20th November and children from Queen Margaret’s School, York, were crowned the winners. Pupils from Queen Margaret’s School battled it out against eleven other Yorkshire schools to be named the winners in the Real Business Challenge, organised by the Young People’s Enterprise Forum, Yorkshire Forward and Coca Cola Enterprises.

Richard Reed, the co-founder of smoothie maker, Innocent Drinks, was among the speakers at today’s first day of a two-day stepUP event in Huddersfield. More than 500 young people from schools across Calderdale and Kirklees are attending one of the UK’s biggest events aimed at raising aspirations about their future, self-employment and the world of business.

More high-profile names have been added to the speaker line-up at a major schools event taking place in the region this week with Matt Bowman, the lead singer of the Pigeon Detectives, confirmed as attending the internationally recognised ‘stepUP’ event.

It has been announced that the region will host one of the UK’s biggest events aimed at raising aspirations among young people, their future and self-employment, when an internationally recognised two-day forum comes to Yorkshire in October 2009.

Students from Brigshaw High School, Castleford were named winners of the Real Business Challenge 2008 and their enterprise success is to be replicated as Yorkshire exports the competition to other regions from next year.

Deirdre Bounds, one of the UK’s top entrepreneurs, has signed up to be the region’s first Enterprise Ambassador for Young People.

Successful business people are being called on to meet, share ideas and inspire the region’s young entrepreneurs at a breakfast event launching Enterprise Week in Yorkshire and Humber.
