Oct 12, 2009

More high-profile names have been added to the speaker line-up at a major schools event taking place in the region this week with Matt Bowman, the lead singer of the Pigeon Detectives, confirmed as attending the internationally recognised ‘stepUP’ event.

On Tuesday and Wednesday (October 13-14), more than 500 young people from schools across Calderdale and Kirklees will attend one of the UK's biggest events aimed at raising aspirations about their future, self-employment and the world of business.

The two-day stepUP event, which started in Australia in 2002 and is being run only for the second time in the UK, will include workshops, presentations, as well as talks and Q&As from speakers from the world of business and entertainment.

Six high-profile names will now be attending - today's three additions are:

• Matt Bowman, the lead singer of the Pigeon Detectives, will talk about how the band started as a group of friends in 2002 and is now one of the UK's leading groups with two hit albums to date

• Deirdre Bounds is the former stand-up comedienne, world backpacker and teacher who set up ethical travel company, i-to-i.com, which became the world's largest gap year company. She now runs ethical children's party company PartiesAroundTheWorld.co.uk and is part of Forward Ladies

• David Thomas is the Guinness memory record breaker, number one bestselling author and international media personality - he has developed one of the most powerful memories in history.
